During the London Climate Action Week, we gather to talk about the business value of carbon removal in today’s shifting landscape.
But what exactly is shifting?
1. Growth
In just the past three months, more carbon removal has been purchased than ever before.
And it's not just the tech giants leading the charge. Companies across aviation, real estate, and food value chains are now investing in removals, signaling a broader, more mainstream uptake. To date, over $8 billion has been spent on carbon removal, and if the momentum continues, we’re on track to reach $50–60 billion annually by 2030.
2. Resilience
The stakes are clear: climate risk is financial risk.
Economists now warn that we could lose up to 25% of global GDP if global warming continues unchecked, with a 12% drop for every additional degree of temperature rise.
In this context, carbon removal isn’t a fringe solution. It’s a critical asset, alongside rapid decarbonisation, that businesses can no longer afford to ignore.
3. Strategy
Carbon removal has moved from the sidelines to the centre of business strategy.
Chief Sustainability Officers are becoming Chief Investment Officers. CFOs are stepping up to drive climate action. And the old idea of a “green premium”? Dead.
In today’s economy, sustainability isn't about spending more, it’s about doing smarter business at a lower cost to the planet and the balance sheet.
4. Adaptation
Decarbonisation alone won’t get us there. We’re past that.
Carbon removal is the necessary backstop. The infrastructure we build today, for durable removals, nature-based credits, and insetting systems, will serve multiple climate goals.
We’ll need a portfolio approach: nature and tech, short- and long-duration, resilience and risk mitigation.
5. Europe’s Moment
The UK is no longer catching up to the US, not when it comes to climate tech.
We have the innovation, capital, and talent to lead. And CUR8 is proud to be building from London, for the world. We believe Europe has the right to win in carbon removal, and we’re making that future real.
